web applications are named applications because they usually do a little more than the average web page. a web application has a lot of interactivity,functionality and a possibily a bit of fun. it feels a little bit like a desktop application, just online. malatze creates these web applications, primarily using the adobe flash platform.

malatze has over 4 years of experience building flash applications. from coding an e-learning app in flash 5, to constructing multiplayer games and rich interfaces in flash 10. specialities include 3d in flash(papervision, away3d, etc), object orientated programming, optimizing performance, design patterns and sexy interfaces

the flash platform encompasses everything flash, and yes, this also means flex. the flash platform is everything in the flash world, ranging from the player to the tools that helps malatze create the application itself.

flex can mean alot of different things to alot of different people with the community. flex builder, for instance, is a programming environment like fdt is, both are plugins for eclipse, nowadays flex developer is renamed flash developer though... for other people flex means the rich component set which is released by adobe, the flex components. but i guess for most people flex just means using the flex sdk to compile and sometimes even mxml to create flash applications, using adobe flash (cs3/cs4 etc.) mainly for asset management, animations and creating the swc files to be imported in the 'flex' project.

mxml, originally from macromedia, is an xml flavour used to describe the structure of a flash application or parts of it. malatze has used mxml in combination with the flex components for several projects.

malatze has acquired different skills, besides his obvious skill coding as a flash platform developer. malatze has worked with php, xml(xslt,soap,xml-rpc), flash media server, java, smarty, photoshop, illustrator,ffmpeg and a number of cms systems. more importantly though is the skill to adapt and the curiousity to get into new technologies and workflows.

malatze uses a wide variety of tools to get the job done. for coding malatze uses both flashdevelop and fdt, depending on the project and the client. for design i use illustrator and photoshop. for asset management and animation i use flash cs3/cs4.

after toying around with java, malatze decided to try his luck with actionscript. soon he discovered the potential and fun in developing flash applications. after playing with mvc himself, he soon discovered the puremvc framework and has build some projects succesfully using it. malatze, besides actionscript, also uses mxml from time to time. malatze has some other skills as well.

playfulness is what the flash platform is all about. building fun stuff which is just a little bit different, exciting and sexy. coding stuff that's both attractive and friendly to the user is hard work and malatze has extensive experience doing just that.

Club Galactik is a massive online game based on the popular animation series 'Galactik Football'. Cutting edge, it's a unique project, by Virtual Fairground, involving 3D and a multi user virtual world, build entirely in Flash.

turn-based market simulation

For Deloitte, malatze and the people at Virtual Fairground built a simulation game. The game simulates market behaviour and features a 3D globe which visualizes the different markets, the game is turn-based and playable by up to 4 players at a time.

jimmy the man tours

Jimmy The Man is a guy in Nicaragua whose dream it is to start his own tourcompany. The Solotrekkers foundation help him do just that. Utilizing the web, video episodes and interactive elements such as shout-outs, the project quickly became a trendsetter in development work.

3d picture browser

To follow the hype of the apple coverflow, Dipdive wanted an exciting new way to view pictures. This 3D-ish way to navigate pictures is a bit different than coverflow and features different ways of browsing. You can swoosh your mouse around, click through the pictures or use the scrollbar.

mediabrowser

The MediaBrowser is an exciting way to navigate video and audio content on the Dipdive community site. The Fisheye effect gives a sense of depth and priority, The app is visual eyecandy, luring the user into the content.

tokidoki online screensaver

For Tokidoki a screensaver was build which can handle games, video's, pictures or messages with hyperlinks. It's a self updating screensaver, fetching new content from the web whenever it's signalled to do so. Old content is cached so an internet connection isn't mandatory.
